Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Occurrences and Population Trends in Constructed and Natural Vernal Pools in Folsom, California
نویسنده
چکیده
Macroinvertebrate populations from constructed and natural vernal pools on the same land forms and in close proximity, were compared quantitatively to determine colonization and temporal trends. Population trends in the natural pools were used to establish the functional success criteria for constructed pools. Success was evaluated by the quantitative and qualitative similarities of the constructed pool invertebrate populations to those of the natural pools. Most constructed pool invertebrate populations were found to mirror existing populations of vernal pool “obligate” species in natural vernal pools within two years. A combination of factors (i.e., over abundance of Glyceria sp., ponding depth, amount of organic matter in pool) may have contributed to the deviation of invertebrate populations in a few constructed vernal pools from those in natural pools. Quantitative and qualitative monitoring will continue for seven more years. CITATION. PAGES 224-235 in: C.W. Witham, E.T. Bauder, D. Belk, W.R. Ferren Jr., and R. Ornduff (Editors). Physicochemical Characteristics and Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities in Temporary Surface Waters of Northern Stark County, Ohio
Natural habitats located in urbanized regions are increasingly being impacted by residential, commercial and agricultural development, but little is known about their biotic and abiotic characteristics. Temporary aquatic habitats are less protected by environmental regulations than permanently flooded habitats, and they have been historically understudied. We sampled temporary aquatic habitats ...
متن کاملCharacterization and Global Distribution of Vernal Pools
We define vernal pools as precipitation-filled seasonal wetlands inundated during periods when temperature is sufficient for plant growth, followed by a brief waterlogged-terrestrial stage and culminating in extreme desiccating soil conditions of extended duration. These factors have played a significant selective role in shaping the vernal pool flora and fauna. Inundation during the growing se...
متن کاملPatterns in Time and Space for Rare Macroinvertebrates and Vascular Plants in Vernal Pool Ecosystems at the Vina Plains Preserve, and Implications for Pool Landscape Management
This report combined spring-aquatic observations (starting in March 1995) of select macroinvertebrates, with summer-dry observations (extending through August 1995) of select plants from the same vernal pool ecosystems at the Vina Plains Preserve, southern Tehama County, California. Density indices were developed from catch-and-release collections of Lepidurus packardi and Branchinecta conserva...
متن کاملPatterns of Vernal Pool Biodiversity at Beale Air Force Base
The effects of substrate geomorphic surface and physical vernal pool dimensions on plant species richness and composition, and large branchiopod occurrences were investigated for 814 vernal pools at Beale Air Force Base, Yuba County, California. Vernal pools mostly occurred on four geomorphic surfaces: the Mehrten, Laguna, Riverbank, and Modesto Formations. Plant species richness was positively...
متن کاملAn Overview of 15 Years of Vernal Pool Restoration and Construction Activities in San Diego County, California
We review the status of five vernal pool creation and restoration projects in San Diego County that were prompted by efforts to mitigate for damage to or destruction of Pogogyne abramsii and Eryngium aristulatum ssp. parishii populations. The first project was begun in 1981 and the latest in 1992. Some degree of success, defined as persistence of significant populations of the target species, w...
